I find that women who care about the opinions of others are the women who don’t go against the grains of society in the first place. Therefore, women who don’t care about the opinions of others are the first ones to live their lives on their own terms and fly in the face of societal and gender norms and constructs. Such women are “dangerous” to patriarchal and puritanical rule, and are the first ones shamed, especially publically, as a way to signal to other women no to try what these “dangerous” women have.

Without such women, however, there would have never been The Suffrage Movement, The Sexual Revolution, or Rowe v. Wade. Women who have fought for the freedoms of other women are the “sluts, bitches, and cunts” of society –– and I thank God for them.

As Laural Thatcher Ulrich famously said, “Well-behaved women seldom make history.”
