SELF-CARE & LOVE
6 Tasks to Complete in the Next 24 Hours to Help You Love Yourself a Little Bit More
In a time of crisis, self-care is a revolutionary act, so incorporate these steps today as a sign of revolt against this insane year.
Holy shit, you guys! The world is on fire, everything is bad, and the only thing we’re expected to be able to control is ourselves. Still, it’s so easy to fall uncontrollably into the trap of doom-scrolling on social media while trying to stay abreast of the news, and instead, become obsessed with all the bad that’s happening in the world. Next thing you know, you’re feeling fatigued, experiencing headaches, and having a hard time getting to bed or staying asleep at night. It’s all you and your friends can talk about –– the virus, the economy, the election, the…fucking…president!
Well, you’re not alone. Millions of us are doing this, and we're hurting ourselves in the process. Though we do need to stay abreast of current affairs, especially this close to an election, we also need to be sure to protect ourselves from the wear-and-tear stress causes on the mind, body, and spirit. So, in the next twenty-four hours, I challenge you to incorporate the following practices and love yourself a little more than you did yesterday.
Above All Else, Be Kind
We are never so hard on others as we are on ourselves, so please remember, especially during this bizarre time of life, to be kind to yourself first and foremost. Today, forgive yourself on purpose and with purpose. Forgive every little misstep, and there will be many. Remind yourself that tomorrow is another day, you’re not a robot, and there is no possible way for you to put one-hundred percent into more than one thing at a time. This means that you won’t get it all done on some days, and that’s totally alright. Put it on tomorrow’s list, grab a glass of wine, and forget about it until then. You’re doing great, sweetie!
Count Nothing Small
Everything you’ll do today is going to be amazing, so celebrate it! You woke up. Bravo! Have a cookie with your coffee, and celebrate the fact that you made it to another day. Did you answer emails today? Brilliant! Prepare a foot soak to place under your desk just before your next Zoom meeting. You wrote a list of three tasks to complete but only got two done? Yay! Move that third task to tomorrow’s list and slip into a hot bath with a bottle of sparkling wine, your favorite funny movie, and a yummy snack. You deserve it! Even if you only managed to do one thing today, celebrate that win. It all means something, and baby steps in the right direction are better than no steps at all.
Do Not Doubt Your Abilities
There’s nothing you can’t do if you put your mind to it. We heard this a lot when we were children and tend to believe it less as adults, but it’s true! Today, don’t doubt your ability to get shit done. Do you hear me? You may not have the energy or capacity to get something accomplished, you may need to rearrange your schedule or life to achieve a few things, but none of this means you can’t do it. Instead, make the necessary changes, move some things around, and create space. Make it happen. But, whatever you do, never, ever doubt your ability to make your dreams, goals, and plans a reality.
Use Food as Medicine and Not as Disease
Eating a healthy diet is a literal life and death matter. There are only two types of food –– the kind that acts as a healing agent to the body and the kind that destroys it. Your food will either be your disease or your medicine, and you can only choose one. Today, choose healthy living foods. Choose foods found in nature and foods with names and origins you understand. Make a hearty salad at home or a local salad bar, drink at least two liters of water, and infuse it with fruit, cucumber, or mint for a little flavor. Prepare broiled fish, steamed rice, and leafy greens for dinner, and skip all pre-packaged and fast foods. Show your body how much you love and appreciate all it has done for you by giving it the healthy food it deserves.
Work Your Body Like You Work Your Mind
Fifteen minutes of fitness can do wonders for your body and your mind today. If you don’t have time for a long-drawn-out workout session, open a fitness app like Nike Training Club and partake in a fifteen or twenty-minute workout that requires no equipment. Don’t overthink it. Just do it. And now that I’ve written that, I do realize that’s Nike’s slogan and oh-my-god I’m a commercial. Still, that doesn't make this advice less valid. Work out all your frustrations and anxieties. Play your music loudly. Have fun with it! Break a sweat today and see how great you feel afterward.
Rest Well, Deeply, and All Night Long
A good night’s rest is the cornerstone to a well-oiled day. There is nothing more damning than starting your morning after a horrible night of tossing and turning. It’s hard to focus, stay on course, and perform at peak capacity. You end up dragging yourself through your entire day and dropping the ball at every turn. Ugh! It’s the worst. So, do yourself a favor this evening and set yourself up for a good night’s rest.
Here’s the thing –– no one is going to love you the way you can, and there is no way you can pour love into anyone else when your tank is running low. Life is nuts; it’s crazy for all of us, and there are times when we’ll lose our footing. It’s only natural, but it’s important to know how to get back on your self-care horse and ride that bitch into the sunset. Good luck today!
